Last Week at Rotary
Last week, President Nuzhat Mahmood presided the meeting. Tara Bowne gave the Invocation. Lori Benton and Matt Moletierre served as greeters, while Dwayne Brown was Sgt. at Arms. Mark Ellsworth was Cashier, while Tara Brown helped with our bank deposit. Martie Cordaro was Chair of the Day. Martie introduced our speaker Daniel Boyd, Chief Operating Officer at DREAM. Daniel spoke about DREAM's mission of providing a life-changing team mentoring approach to at-risk youth in Omaha, NE and Springfield, MO. This proven approach puts children in a comfortable setting where they’re encouraged to discuss, learn and grow as individuals. More information about DREAM can be found here.

Matt McKeever Secretary Report
Omaha West Rotary Club Secretary Report for June 1, 2018.

We had a great number of guests again on Friday.  Guests and their host Rotarians included Daniel Boyd (Martie Cordero), Randy Porter (Martie Cordero), Whitney Baker (Deb Neary), Maryssa Brown (Dwayne Brown), Thomas Hollingsworth (Luke McNeese) and Lynette Curtin (Yolanda Hoffman).  Brad Hess introduced us to his fiance, Ann Murley.  Matt told Ann that all the stories about Brad were true and that the Rotarians at their table could confirm that.

Red Badge Members were recognized.  The Rotarians with June birthdays were celebrated.  Once more, John Morey led us in singing the Happy Birthday song to them.

Good news included word from Ron Niederhaus about his grandson's baseball scholarship.  Nuzhat Mahmood shared that her son, Alexander, graduated from Pre-Kindergarten.  Deb Neary thanked everyone for her primary victory for State Board of Education.  That took some wind out of Matt's sails for assessing fines against her because he had a few newspaper articles about Deb obtaining 51% of the vote in the primary.

Matt fined Gene Klein for the Greater Omaha Chamber's Business Excellence Award for Project Harmony and also an editorial in the World Herald authored by Gene.  Matt announced that no one sent in any articles to get him fined in the last week, but Martie Cordero said that he saw an news story on TV about Bitcoin.  Matt took it under consideration at the time, but, upon further reflection, allowed the fine and fined himself a dollar.

Matt told the club assembly one last word of wisdom from the billboard in front of that bar in North Bend, Nebraska:  "The dinosaurs did not have beer.  How'd that work out for them?"
Meet Newest Member Dan Lassek
Last week, Martie Cordaro introduced our newest member Dan Lassek. Dan is a financial advisor with The Lassek & Schubert Group at Merrill Lynch in Omaha. One of his partners, Kathryn Schubert, is a past president and member of Suburban Rotary. He was born and raised in Omaha and is married to his wife, Mandy, and has 2 boys, Kaden (7) and Brooks (2) with a third boy (Hays) on the way any day now. He is active in the community holding advisory council positions with 40 Below, which is a part of the Omaha Performing Arts, and Scrubs Ambassadors, which is a part of the Children’s Hospital Foundation. He is an alumni of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He volunteers as a football coach for his oldest son’s team with Millard United. Please be sure to introduce yourself and welcome Dan when you see him at our Friday meeting.

Trees at Dewey Dog Park

Omaha West Rotary in partnership with the City of Omaha Parks and Recreation department will roll out a campaign to raise money for trees for the new Dewey Park Dog Park in midtown.  If you have a four legged friend and would to have contribute please check out the link https://redbasket.org/1649.  In the fall our club may have the opportunity to plant the trees as we did last month in North Omaha if there is interest.  The park will have a small dog area, large dog area, agility area, and water play feature.  Please help us spread the word about the park and raise some funds for nice trees.

Happy Birthday, June Celebrants!

Let's go to Toronto for the RI Convention!
Let's go to Toronto in June 23-27, 2018 for the Rotary International (RI) Convention!

There is no experience for a Rotarian quite like an International Convention.  Meet old friends and make new ones from around the world.  Hear great speakers and enjoy fabulous entertainment. Participate in the many breakout sessions on topics of interest to you.  Stroll through the House of Friendship. Enjoy the many restaurants and tourism opportunities that Toronto has to offer. The next several RI Conventions will be outside of North America, so it's a good time to go this year. You will not believe it, but it's really not expensive to fly to Toronto. We did a random search online and the round trip ticket ranges from as low as $220 to $400. Of course, it could go higher if you fly business class, but the general fares are pretty good.

To register for the RI Convention, please click here. If you need help with your registration, please contact Jill or Yolanda.
